This certainly was a lot to take in; even Klaus would admit it. However, he had had centuries to get used to the idea and everything that should have come with it. The blood lust, the issue with the sun light (thankfully that didn’t affect him – that would be irritating), having to be invited in, compulsion, etcetera etcetera. There was a long list of things and details that one could really only learn over time, and poor Alina here was getting a crash course. And she also had to deal with the fact that she had just murdered her fiancé, and had almost done the same to her three year old child, at the same time.
So it was understandable that she was having a hard time wrapping her head around everything. Still, Klaus didn’t enjoy being the lecturer. He had more important things to do with his time.
Thankfully Alina didn’t push the explanation about his compulsion of Aidan any further – and she thanked him, in fact! Her words almost elicited a laugh from the hybrid, but he caught it before it escaped and merely grinned in the way that only he could: satisfied, amused, confident, and completely and totally in control. Whatever Alina might have thought about it, Klaus definitely was in control. She was in the palm of his hand, and she would do just what he needed her to. There was no way around it; it was that simple.
Of course, it helped that she was now slightly indebted to him for saving Aidan. However short lived that moment was before she went off yelling at him again. She had a pair of lungs, she did. But it was amusing more than anything, which was a good thing for Alina. If she had irritated Klaus instead, things wouldn’t have gone nearly as well for her. If things had gone well at all from her perspective. At least her son wasn’t dead? That had to help her outlook, at least a little.
“Oh come now,” Klaus tossed back at her, “think about it. I’m not pushing the blame onto him as you put it, I’m just pointing out the facts. You would have been left to continue your happy little boring human life if your father hadn’t kept his secrets from you. If he hadn’t run, I would have gone straight to him. But he had to make things difficult.” He shrugged, shifting his weight on his heels and the weight of little Aidan in his arms. It wasn’t that the boy was heavy in any respect, but it was odd just holding him there. Although, it must have been an interesting image, especially if anyone who actually knew Klaus say him holding the sleeping child. Most of them thought of him much like Alina did, which had to only make it more interesting.
“You misunderstand me, dear. I’m not after them to harm them. There have been a few… casualties, but that is far from my intention.”
Was it really that simple in Klaus’ mind? Yes, honestly. At least this point in his “plan” was simple and not targeted at anyone. He wanted to make more hybrids, and really, what was the downside of that? Sure, many of the werewolves he had attempted to turn had ended up dying or being killed because the transition failed, but that wasn’t Klaus’ fault. Not really. Hell, you could go as far as blaming the original witch in the first place. If she had never cursed Klaus to restrain his werewolf side, he would have known centuries ago how to effectively create another hybrid. There would be none of this testing, none of this trial and error. It was nothing malicious on his part – not yet anyway.

The idea that her entire life had just been torn from her in one instant was almost more than Alina could handle. Had it not been Aidan's presence in her line of vision, she probably would have lost it by now in a manner far worse than she already had. Of course, imagining such a thing to even be possible was probably difficult considering she'd just murdered her fiance in cold blood but that by certainly didn't mean achieving such a feat was impossible. As it was, however, she did have her son to think about and so was forced to refrain from launching herself at the monster standing before as she so desperately wanted to. It didn't matter that she knew she wouldn't matter a chance. All she wanted at that moment was to try her hardest to rip out Klaus' throat for turning her into this - a blood-drinking monster. The only thing that happened to be stopping her at the moment was the sunlight in which he stood coupled with the fact that he also happened to be holding her now sleeping three-year-old in his arms.
Honestly, it was that very sight which seemed to confuse Alina more than anything else had since she'd first awoken to her new life as a transitioning immortal. Initially, she'd believed him to be nothing more than a heartless bastard content with preying on innocent people simply because they suited his needs. Seeing him standing before her now though, Aidan cradled in his arms, the young mother couldn't help but wonder if there was more to the insane psychopath than she'd originally seen. Had it not been for him, she thought to herself silently, I would have killed my son without a second thought in the same way as Liam. We both know that so there's no point in denying it. My question is: why the hell did he bother saving Aidan in the first place? After all, he's not exactly old enough to be of any use to Klaus so what could he possibly want with a toddler? If she were honest with herself(which she was trying to be in order to avoid slipping up again), it was that thought which frightened her above all else.
No matter what lies she could have possibly told herself to make it all seem like a bad dream that she's wake from at any moment, Alina was well aware that Klaus had done her a favor in rescuing Aidan from the deadly bite of his bloodthirsty mother only moments before. More than anything, however, it was the inability to imagine what a monster could possibly want with her child that both terrified and enraged her - though she was determined to try and keep Klaus from realizing how she really felt about this whole dilemma. Still, her father had raised her to have the best possible manners and so it took everything in her to force down her pride long enough to express her gratitude to Klaus for protecting Aidan from her bloodthirstiness and complete lack of control. The look on his face as her simple 'thank-you' registered in his head made her blood boil though, and she couldn't help but wonder if he got off on other people's pain.
Of course, every person on the planet had their limits when it came to dealing with arrogant assholes and Alina was no different in that regard. That, coupled with the fact that her heightened emotional state certainly wasn't helping her at the moment, meant that it wasn't long before she was back to yelling at the man(or monster, as she preferred to view Klaus) responsible for tearing her life away with one little decision. "Just shut up, would you?" she shot back, the exasperation and emotional stress that she found herself trying to cope with evident in her tone when she spoke. "My father was trying to protect Aidan and myself from the likes of you and nothing you can say will make me think differently. Obviously, you've never cared about anyone or you would have realized that's what people do. They protect those they care about! Besides, if you were so interested in my father, why not simply pursue him instead of ripping apart our lives?"
It was only when she noticed Klaus shifting her son from one arm to the other that Alina realized how much of a hypocrite she herself was being - even more so considering the fact that she was attempting to preach on protecting one's loved ones only a short while after attempting to drain her own son dry. That isn't your fault though, she told herself mentally, attempting to once again quell the guilt she could feel building up inside her. This wasn't your choice, not by a long shot. This whole mess, all of it, is his doing. Still, the blame game could only hold off the knowledge that she'd acted of her own free will for so long. That being said, she definitely intended to be alone when she finally came to terms with the fact that her actions had cost Liam his life. It was only when she heard the word 'casualties' that Alina managed to pull her attention from her thoughts and turn her accusatory gaze on the hybrid before her once again. "Casualties?" she questioned immediately, wanting to know what he meant. "Just what kind of casualties are we talking about here?" Sorry for the wait love.... |

Klaus had to wonder how long this was going to go on for. Yeah, yeah, he had just turned poor Alina’s life upside down in a matter of moments, but unlike many new vampires, she actually had someone to explain these things to her. She didn’t have to panic because of an unexplained bloodlust (except she did anyway, but it was slightly explained at least). She didn’t have to hide away in the shadows during the day until she stumbled upon a witch willing to help her, because Klaus had already retrieved an enchanted necklace for her. He hadn’t quite given it to her yet though – the sunlight keeping them apart was quite the productive tool – but she would earn it before they left. She didn’t have to wander endlessly with “eternity” laid out in front of her with no purpose. Because Klaus would give her a purpose.
He may need to manipulate her to do that, but that was just what was necessary and Klaus certainly had no qualms about that.
Klaus’ expression began to grow bored as Alina released another tirade his way – focused on her father’s innocence and how horrible Klaus was for trying to put any blame on him, blah, blah, blah. It certainly wasn’t a good sign for the poor girl. A bored Klaus is that much closer to an irritated Klaus, and an irritated Klaus could be deadly. Thankfully, he wasn’t quite at the point yet. He was just getting tired of explaining away his ideals to a girl who couldn’t seem to comprehend the smallest tidbit of his plans. Of course, he hadn’t shared much but tidbits, but that was beside the point.
“Dear, people are selfish beings; they don’t often protect other people out of simple good will. At best it’s because they don’t want to lose the other person, which is about as selfish as you can get.” The hybrid shrugged – an awkward motion with the boy he was holding but still an obvious one. “And I came to you because I need… leverage. A bit like your lovely boy here is to you, if you understand. I need your father to work with me, and his kind are rather stubborn when it comes to me. I need all the advantages I can get.
“It’s just proper strategy.”
Klaus let out a small breath of air as Alina caught on to the word “casualties.” Perhaps there had been a better word to use – something that wouldn’t have attracted her attention as much. But oh well, what was said was said. While he could likely compel her to forget certain parts of their conversation if he so chose, he didn’t want to waste the effort right now. Besides, she would be more helpful to him if she was more knowledgeable, so he might as well explain himself.
The hybrid leaned back against the far wall, making himself more comfortable as he stood facing Alina. “I’m trying to do something that has only ever been done once in the world – to myself, in fact. The problem is, since it was done to me many centuries ago, I don’t quite have the process down pat yet. I’m forced to experiment, and, well, things go wrong.” He spoke of the whole thing so clinically, so detached. One could hardly believe he was talking about living people that had died. Of course, it was true that Klaus didn’t think very much of werewolves – or of any other creatures on the earth besides himself and his own (currently staked…) family – but this was still in stark contrast to how he normally treated those around him. At least he pretended to care sometimes.
But he was getting tired of this conversation and wanted to move on with his plans.
