BUILD||Still growing into the man that he will eventually become, Emerson is in that awkward stage every male must go through before reaching adulthood where they can't be considered an adult or a child. At the moment, he's in the middle of a growth spurt which has jumped him from 5'3" to 5'8" in less than six months and it doesn't seem to be over just yet. That being said, he does possess a rather slim build but months spent at the gym to keep fit so that he could remain involved in sports have his body lined with corded muscle which has him weighing in at roughly 180lbs though he doesn't look like he could weigh more than about 130lbs soaking wet. He might look like a scrawny little thing but looks aren't everything, right?
STYLE||Similar to any other boy his age, Emerson's quite the fan of ripped jeans and band t-shirts. Though his family wasn't rich by any means, they had always had more than enough to get by and so he'd never really been limited when it came to clothing options. Still, he is by no means preppy. If anything, he's exactly the opposite - much preferring to sport the grungy look instead of plaids and polos. Converses and beanies are his best friend and you'll rarely find him without some sort of musical device; whether it be his acoustic guitar 'Baby' or his far more portable Ipod with a pair of high definition earphones thrown carelessly around his neck. Also, you've never catch him out and about during the day without a pair of sunglasses as his species of half vampire (which he's unaware of) has made both his skin and eyes extremely sensitive to the sunlight.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES||Surprisingly, there isn't much that sets Emerson apart from others around him physically. The only startling or 'unique' feature he might possess are his eyes which are a startling green with flecks of icy blue and light brown without. Some of his friends have even told him that they make it seem as though he's staring into their very souls.
PERSONALITY||Just like any other teenager, there are two very different sides of Emerson. There's the side that he projects to the world of being something of a hardass who is afraid of nothing and then there is the softer, more sensitive side that he usually surpresses for fear of either being hurt or hurting others should they learn of the horrible things that he's done. Of course, he rarely allows anyone glimpses of the latter part of his personality as the idea of appearing 'weak' to him is almost more repulsive than anything in the world. Granted, there are few who would actually consider being sensitive a 'weakness' but he's not about to take any unnecessary risks which might end up doing nothing except earning him the role of pug to the bullies that exist in many forms during this stage of his life. Now, to elaborate a little bit more on each of the two sides that form in full exactly 'who' Emerson Blake Sullivan is as an individual.
The Partier/Hardass: Alright, so when you first meet Emerson I guarantee you that nine times out of ten this is the side on which you will base your first impression of him as a person. Often acting as though he couldn't give two shits about anyone or anything, he spends the majority of his time drinking and smoking away the guilt brought about by the fire which claimed the lives of both his mother and sister - a fire he set. Very heavily into music, he favors hardcore metal and alternative over most others. He's a huge rebel as well, refusing to be told what he can and can't do as he believes himself fully capable of making life's decisions completely on his own and that he knows what's best for himself. If there's mischief ensuing, especially in school and public areas, he's usually at the heart of it. Arrogant and very persuasive, he's definitely a match for authority figures and it'll be hard (if not bordering on impossible) to break his spirit should you decide to try.
The Sensitive Romantic: Honestly, there are probably only a handful of people in the world who have even caught a glimpse of this side of Emerson and about half of them are no longer alive. He refuses to let people in generally because he either doesn't want to be hurt or to hurt anyone else. With the deaths of his mother and sister, he only chose to further supress this side of himself when he started hanging out with older kids simply so that he could have access to the drugs and alcohol he craves so badly. Still, should you manage to reach this part of him, you'll learn what Emerson can really be like. Sweet-hearted, he's extremely loyal to those he cares about and would more than likely die if it meant saving someone that he loved. He writes poetry and music as ways to express all of his thoughts and pent up emotions but, as of yet, hasn't shared a lick of it with anyone. Really, he does have a heart but he simply chooses to keep it under quite the assortment of 'locks' where the only key is in his mind. Basically, the only way you'll come to see this part of him is if he wants you to.

HISTORY||Though she wouldn't have changed it for the world, it came as quite a shock to a nurse by the name of Selena Sullivan who had been called in to pick up an extra shift the night of March 1, 1997 at the local hospital in Charlotte, Virginia when she took out the trash only to find a what had to be a newborn no more than a few hours old wrapped tightly in a wad of blankets behind the dumpster with only a single envelope which contained at note that said only 'His name is Emerson. Please take care of my son.' Instantly fearing for the child's life as her maternal instincts kicked in, Selena snatched the baby up and rushed him inside to Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) where he was immediately admitted and checked out only to shock the doctors entirely when it was discovered that he was in absolute perfect health. Labeled something of a miracle, they kept him under observation for the next few days until they were sure he was fine before signing the releases so that he might be put up for adoption. Little did they know, however, but Emerson was no human child. Birthed by Isobel Flemming as a human while conceived with the help of one vampire named Damon Salvatore(unknowingly), he was a hybrid of sorts - quite possibly the first to ever exist in the world.
Of course, no one knew this except for the Isobel who had pushed the child out with aid of a witch whose name she chose not to inquire upon. Selena couldn't seem to shake him from her thoughts though, seeing the fact that she'd been the one to find him as a sign from God that she was meant to take him in as she and her husband Cameron had found out not six months earlier that they were both sterile and so would never be able to have children of their own. It was because of this that they discussed it before choosing to go through with the adoption; honoring the unknown mother's wishes as to his first name and so having him christened Emerson Blake Sullivan at the three month anniversary of his birth and entrance into her life. With her profession as a nurse and his father's as the best lawyer in Charlotte, Virginia he never wanted for anything and so began the adventure of growing up with a human family rather uneventfully. It wasn't until he was about a year old that his skin and eyes began reacting to the sun. Horrible rashes bordering on the appearance of burns would cover every exposed part of his body whenever he went outside and the screams that would ensue upon his eyes being exposed to the sun instantly worried his parents and they took him to a specialist in the hopes of finding answers.
There really were no answers to be had for his condition, however, and it was only by trial and error really that they were able to find something that could be considered even close to a cure. With the use of a special prescription strength sunblock and specially designed UV resistant sunglasses he was finally able to go outside during the day so long as he didn't remain exposed for extended periods of time. Because of this, he was both sheltered and pampered by his parents in an attempt to make up for the lack of a real childhood he so badly craved. Still, even with all of this there was never a single thought to cross either of the Sullivan's minds that their child could be anything related to the world of the supernatural. Firm believers in God, they didn't bother with the myths of vampires and the like as it was nothing more than nonsense to them. Emerson knew from a very early age that there was something wrong with him but the doctors explained it away as just a new skin disease and so that's what he quickly grew to believe was wrong with him; no questions asked. What his parents weren't aware of, however, was the love he had for the taste of blood - something he was first introduced to at the age of 5 when he skinned his knee outside and wiped the blood off his finger only to then lick it off with his tongue. Something told him it was a bad thing though, and he's never told another soul despite the fact that he always ordered his meat rare and often cut himself 'accidentally' just so that he could taste it once again.
When Emerson was eight, his parents realized that what they wanted more than anything was to bring another addition into both their home and family. Financially stable, they knew they could support a second child but wanted their son's input on the matter first. Luckily, he was tired of having to always be alone and never having anyone to play with and so he was thrilled by the idea. It was only two months later that six month old Charlotte came home as the newest and final member of the Sullivan family. Though he was entranced with her at first, she soon became 'old news' in the eight-year-old's mind. Though he loved her as any older brother should, they were simply too far apart in age to have any common interests and the fact that they were different genders only made relating to one another that much more difficult. Not long after that, Emerson began developing what most psychologists would consider to be an obsession with fire after they had a bonfire in the backyard one night. There was just something within the dancing flames that captivated him as nothing ever had before - leading him to soon begin experimenting with starting his own despite the fact that he knew absolutely nothing about how to control them. Still, he read every book he get his hands on where the subject happened to be fire and it wasn't long before he had learned enough so that he felt quite comfortable starting small ones of his own just for fun.
Unfortunately, he'd never held any value in the saying 'Play with fire and you'll eventually get burned'. Choosing instead to see it as nothing more than a joke, it was on the night of Charlotte's 7th birthday that the unthinkable happened. Believing himself to have mastered containing blazes as none of his family had yet to realize exactly what he was doing in his free time, Emerson decided to set a blaze just a few feet away from their house when he got home from school as his dad would be working late that night and his mom was supposed to be taking Char to go get her hair cut in preparation for the party that weekend. What he hadn't taken into consideration, however, was that there had been a drought that summer and that his sister had come home from school early that day courtesy of a stomach bug. Within minutes of his slighting the tinder he'd gathered the night before, the blaze had gotten out of control and their house was on fire. Though he ran as fast as he could to their neighbors, the fire department arrived too late and managed to put out the fire only to pull from within the charred remains of both his mother and sister. While it was eventually labeled as arson, Emerson chose to remain quiet and no one ever suspected for a moment that the teenager could possibly be the cause of such a horrible crime.
With all of their possessions having been destroyed along with the devastating loss of both his wife and daughter, Cameron soon decided to pass up the project of restoring their house to its former glory. Believing that they needed a new start, he packed up what little they'd been able to recover and moved himself and Emerson to the neighboring town of Mystic Falls where he hoped they might be able to turn over a new leaf and begin to heal with the help of one another. It instantly has appeared that this isn't to be the case, as the guilt which is now silently eating away at Emerson without anyone's knowledge has caused him to turn to drugs and alcohol as a way to escape the night terrors and the secret that haunts his every waking moment; even if only for a little while. His grades have quickly begun to slip from straight A's to D's and F's but he's closed himself off to everyone that it seems almost impossible to reach him anymore. Everyone, that is, save for a fellow partier in his grade by the name of Jeremy Gilbert who he seems to have found a kindred spirit. Little do he and his dad know, however, that their new home is full of the supernatural - a few of whom Emerson also just so happens to be related to; including his new found friend. What a shock it'll be when his true parentage finally comes to light.

It wasn't that he came across as a freak or anything of that nature but he'd never really fit in anywhere - even as a kid. Of course, the fact that he had been forced to witness the double murder/suicide of his entire family probably didn't help but he'd managed to survive. Or at least survive as best he could, anyways. Like every other person in the world with such a traumatic past, it had taken him time to find an outlet of some kind. Luckily, his had come in a form that was 100% healthy instead of turning to drugs or self-harm like other's he'd witnessed while in the system as a child/preteen. No, his was escaping from the horror that reality had become for him into the world of a good book where anything was possible if you believed hard enough. Obviously, he knew that such things which existed in such alternate realities rarely happened in real life but that was what made him dive even further into the pages of whatever novel he happened to get his hands on.
What came as even more of a surprise was that the psychologists he'd spoken too as a child seemed to think something was even wrong with him. Unlike 'normal' children whose minds tend to jump from one activity to another, Ben's only ever remained on reading. There were times that his foster parents had even been forced to remind him to eat as he probably would have forgotten courtesy of whatever novel had managed to steal him away into it's pages and plot lines. It was with his head buried in one book or another that he flew through his childhood, however, drinking in facts and other information most people would consider completely useless though he found them intriguing. That isn't to say that he didn't know what was going on around him at any given time but the truth was more that he just really didn't care. Books had become his life - an escape whose company he'd come to crave almost to the point of addiction. Though he'd never admit it, the worlds authors create with their minds had grown to be more than a mere escape for him. They were a crutch he truly needed to deal with life in general.
It was this reason more than any other that had caused him to seek out a job where he could be around them constantly. As a result, his choices for employment had been rather limited to the Mystic Falls library or the bookstore and so he'd ended up securing a position at the latter not two weeks after having moved into town. At least it's close, he thought to himself as he pushed a cart full of new arrivals around the small shop, pausing only to fit each novel into its proper place on various shelves. After all, there's no point in wasting the gas to drive when I can walk. With a steady pace he worked, pulling the oldest novels off each shelf only to replace them with the newer books that were more likely to sell and not a full hour had passed before his cart was empty once more. Only after he returned it to its place in the back of the store did he catch the faint jingling which meant that someone had decided to drop by. Unfortunately, his shift partner who usually handled the 'people part' of his job had called in sick which meant he was left covering that as well. Taking a deep breath to calm his nerves, he returned to the main area of the bookstore with a rather shaky and obviously uncomfortable smile. "Welcome to Brick Road Books. How can I be of service to you?"[atrb=width,100]
