Stefan is the one bitten by the werewolf instead of Damon and in an effort to save his little brother, Damon sells his soul to Klaus for the cure. However, Katherine does not hold her end of the deal and carry the vial of Klaus's blood to Stefan.
Stefan Salvatore is dead.
The whereabouts of both Katherine and Klaus are unknown at this time.
Meanwhile, Mystic Falls is in the throes of change. With Stefan dead and Damon having vanished with Klaus, Elena is very much human and very much alone - without her Salvatore brothers.
There are also whispers of another vampire, taking slaves of her own and working in the close circles of close. Pick a side and a species, there will be plenty of opportunities for originals to enter the plot.
