Danielle had been living in Mystic Falls since she was eighteen and old enough to live on her own out of the crappy city in Louisiana she'd lived in before. That wasnt to say that she didnt like where she came from. Baton Rouge was a beautiful city. It was just the fact that the bad memories outweighed the good there. She'd been raped and abused, and that was the only thing she ever saw when she was back there. No matter how many people back at the orphanage she'd lived in her whole life cared about her, they couldnt wipe out that memory.
Walking into the Mystic Grill, she shoved her hands into the pockets of her jeans and walked over to the bar, sliding onto a stool and dropping her bag at her feet. Today had been a particularly hectic day. She'd spent the time at work, dealing with crabby customers behind a rundown desk she'd rather have burnt down than sit behind. And what little spare time she did, she dedicated to one of the songs she was working on. Not that she'd gotten past a line or two at all. Her muse had dried up the last couple days. Lack of inspiration and all that. Sighing, she dug her iPhone out of her pocket and without looking up, called out her order, "A bottle of Pilsner, please."
Thinking about the red rose tattoo that was visible on the back of her right shoulder, she smiled faintly, thinking about the first song she'd ever written. Like the tattoo, the song had been in honor of her closest friend who had been killed. The girl's name - predicably - had been Rose and she'd gotten the tattoo on the anniversary of the girl's death. The song was her focal point though. It had gotten her through so much, just like music in itself had. Maybe thinking about those things would give her the inspiration she needed for her new song. Of course, it might also help if she and the guys could think up a name for their band.
A year ago, she'd met a couple guys who'd been performing in the town square for fun and she'd joined them. It had been only a couple hours and a few beers later when they'd decided they wanted to start a band of their own. Four guys and one girl... None of which could figure out a decent name, and she would be damned if she let Logan cow her into some stupid name. If it were up to him, they'd be named the Suicidal Bagels. Lord help them all. Danielle had gotten rid of that idea pretty fast.
When her beer came, she looked up and smiled, "Thanks. I needed this." she said, taking a sip of her drink and then setting the bottle down. Tucking her hair behind her ear, she looked down at the phone in front of her and shook her head. She had absolutely no idea what she was going to do for what remained of the night. She had only just gotten out of work and that fact was as sad as it was true. She barely even had a life anymore, and what little time she did have to herself, she either spent in the Grill flirting with Carter or partying, or playing music, or singing or hanging out with the band. Or anything in general. God, her life was boring.

An alarm was shrieking somewhere. And after several seconds, Carter woke up enough to turn off his alarm and roll out of bed. 6:30 am. Why did he always have to get up so early, you would think a 17 year old boy could get his butt out of bed in the mourning without help, but apparently not. Still half asleep, the 26 year old ran a hand through his hair, grabbed a pair of pajama bottoms, and trudged through the house to start the coffee maker. As he passed by Alec’s still closed door he rapped his knuckles 3 times. “Alec, Get up. You got school.” Several minutes later he was stifling a yawn as he watched the deep black liquid seep into the pot drip by slow drip. Finally the tantalizing smell made him need to leave the kitchen, which was good since he needed to get Alec up, who he would bet money on was still fast asleep. As expected the door was still shut. Carter rapped his knuckles on the door again and cracked it. “Alec, come on dude. Get up.” An unintelligible groan came from the lump of blankets on the bed. “I’m serious, Alec. Don’t make me dump you out of bed.” Another grumble, this one sounding vaguely like ‘5 more min’. Carter just gave a deep chuckle picked up a discarded basketball on the chair by the door and chucked it at the bed. “Now Alec. Your gonna be late.” A loud grunt, and the lump sat up. “Alrigh’, alright’, ‘m up.” Carter rolled his eyes and made his way back to the kitchen where the smell of coffee was even stronger. He poured himself a mug and tossed a bagel in the toaster while he listened to Alec moving around getting ready for school.
20 minutes later, the 17 year old emerged from the hallways dressed and ready for school. “Wow… It lives.” Alec laughed and grabbed Carters bagel when it popped up. “Yea laugh it up”, although with a mouthful of food it came out a little slurred. Right then, he seemed to glimpse the clock. “Shit, I’m late” and took off at a run towards the door. “Bag!” Alec trotted back into the room and snagged his bag from the couch and grabbed the travel mug of coffee Carter had poured him before disappearing towards the front door again. Carter could only smile and picked up the paper off the table. He was about halfway through an article on the front page when he heard the front door open and slam again. He lifted his grey-blue eyes up from the newspaper in his hands to see Alec storm back through the door. “Great, my car won’t start, now I’m gonna be late.” “What’s wrong with it?” “How should I know, can you give me a ride?” Carter put the paper down on the table and moved so he was standing across the bar from his little brother. “I can’t… However, If you swear to be careful… You can take my car.” “Seriously?!” Carter picked his keys up and handed them towards Alec but grabbed them into his hands seconds before Alec could take them. “I’m serious Alec. Be careful, no damage at all, or your paying for it.” Alec just grinned and snagged the keys as he ran out the door. Seconds later he heard the deep rumble and the peel of gravel as his 17 year old baby brother drove off in his prized possession. The jet black t-top 1975 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray had been a piece of crap when he’d bought it as a teenager, but over the last 10 years he’d poured every penny he had into the car until it was in tip top shape and purred like a kitten. He shook his head and went back to his paper deciding to finish his coffee before starting work on Alec’s car.
Several hours, $200 dollars, and a new alternator later, Alec’s Jeep was up and running again. Carter parked it in the driveway and proceeded to do a few chores before he had to get ready for work at 4, but at 3:50 pm Carter was showered, dressed in fresh clothes and ready for another night at the bar. He pulled into the employee parking lot of The Grill and parked his bike beside someone’s truck, before entering through the back door and stowing his helmet and heading behind the bar. Early afternoons were usually pretty slow at the bar portion of The Grill, and today was no exception. The bar was pretty much empty, just a handful or hardcore drinkers, which gave Carter the chance to clean the glasses behind the bar, restock, and make the polished wood shimmer under his cloth before the nightly rush came in. Before long students poured into the Grill mostly sitting along the tables in the restaurant portion, but a few moved to the bar. He chatted, flirted and worked his way through the next couple hours, nodding at Alec when he came in with a group of friends and took up a booth in the corner.
Finally the younger crowd cleared out, and made way for the older ones. During a break in the crowd, Carter was polishing some glasses behind the bar when a familiar face walked through the door and took up a seat at the bar rather preoccupied. He smiled as she called out her drink order without looking up from her phone, and he turned to grab the cold bottle from the cooler below the bar. With an expert flick of his wrist he popped the cap off the bottle and pushed it across the bar to her. Danielle was a regular in here, and it had become part of his routine to flirt with the beautiful auburn woman every time she came in. But he couldn’t help but chuckle when she glanced up to thank the ‘kind bartender’ for her drink without really realizing it was him. Another patron waved his attention and he moved off to make the guys drink before tucking his towel into his back pocket and coming back to Danii. He grinned one of his million dollar smiles and leaned on his elbows on the polished bar in front of her. “Well Hey there beautiful, betcha just couldn’t get enough of me huh? His voice was teasing, and he had a twinkle in his eye that just seemed to promise he was thinking naughty things even if he actually wasn’t.

The last thing she'd thought about when she'd originally walked in to the Grill, was that she knew a couple of the 'tenders who worked there. One was a former vampire whom she'd heard of around town. At least, the rumor was that she was a former vamp. No one really knew how she came back though, but everyone knew some weird shit happened around Mystic Falls. The other was a man, about two years older than her, with the most gorgeous eyes she'd ever seen and the biggest habit of shameless flirting ever. Carter Miller and Danii had met each other a while back and had become friends, occasionally having a drink or two together, though she knew he generally drank alone. She knew he was a werewolf and he knew about her being one too, so it was the perfect arrangement. A little flirting here, a little shameless physical relief there. Nothing like it.
In all honesty, Danii hadnt known that he was working today and when he dropped her beer off in front of her, she barely even realized it was him, with that cocky grin of his. Taking a sip of her drink and sliding her phone into her pocket, she looked around casually, thinking about anything but work. Smiling faintly, she thought about how Vanessa - the manager at the orphanage back in Baton Rouge - had a birthday coming up soon. She had to remember to send a card and present or something, maybe go visit. The idea made her want to go back home and visit even more, even if it were just for a day. Vanessa had always been kind to her, and they wrote to each other often.
It was right about then that she heard a familiarly deep voice, knowing exactly who it was without looking at him. Carter. Smiling, she looked forward to where he was leaning on the counter, only a ways from her, watching her with those striking grey-blue eyes of his and that charming smile. His voice hinted at a tease and she chuckled, "Oh, baby, you know I can never get enough of your handsome self." she said, smirking and taking a sip of her drink. He had that same twinkle in his eyes that he did when they'd first met and he'd hit on her so fast her head woulda spinned if she hadnt been used to that kinda thing.
She chuckled and watched him, "What you been up to, sweetheart?" she asked, taking another sip of her beer before setting the bottle down on the counter, "How's baby brother doin'? Havent seen him 'round here lately. He get rid of that crappy little jeep of his yet?"

It was shaping up to be a pretty average night at the bar, and he was rather entertained by the fact that Danii hadn’t even recognized him at first. But the moment he spoke, he could almost see the change in her posture. He already knew what to expect when she turned on her stool to face him. Her long dark hair framed a beautiful face and a pair of brown eyes that could hold a look to rival some of his own all paired up with a shining smile. “Oh baby, you know I can never get enough of your handsome self.” He chuckled and leaned a little more on the bar so they were on eye level. “And you know my nights are never complete until I get to see your gorgeous face.” He flashed her another devious smile. “What have you been up to, sweetheart? How’s baby brother doing’? Haven’t seen him ‘round here lately. He get rid of that crappy little jeep of his yet?” Carter dropped his head with a chuckle. “I’ been good. Working, paying the bills, keeping the youngin’ out of trouble. You know, the usual.” He fished a rocks glass and bottle of jack from below the bar. “As for him… Well, let’s just say that if he doesn’t get his grades up, he might not have that little jeep of his any longer.” He sighed at the thought of actually having to be the ‘adult’ and finished pouring his drink before knocking it back in a few gulps.
“He’s just lucky that I promised to take care of him. I think I’ve dumped more money into that pile of his that I have in my baby.” He shook his head to rid his thoughts of the latest charge to Alec’s car. “It broke down this mourning again. I had to loan him mine. He was in here earlier though. You probably missed him by a couple of hours.” Another group of young women at the end of the bar waved a hand to get his attention. He smiled in their direction, grinned deviously at Danii and winked as he started walking backwards towards the waiting women. “Be right back.” He approached the women with a swing of his hips and leaned on the bar in front of them. The women smiled and openly looked him over as he approached, but it was all part of the job: The illusion that they could have him even if he had no desire to see them outside of the bar. He laughed and flirted his way through making their drinks and made sure to wink at a tall blonde in the group as he lingeringly touched her hand in giving her the change. That started the giggling all over again as they slipped him a tip and one of them was even bold enough to grab his hand and slip her number into it before hurrying back to their booth to oogle him from afar.
He shook his head and turned back to Danii letting his smile slip away. He had never really been the overly social type, but he had to do what he had to do in order to make ends meet. “Shot?” He asked as he ran a hand through his hair, pushing it back from his face with another sigh. But he didn’t wait for her answer. He knew Danii well enough that he didn’t need to. Carter just filled 2 crystal shot glasses with patron and pushed one across the bar to her with a lime. Picking up his own, he clinked it to hers and shot it back with a small shudder. And after a slight grumble as he sucked the juice out of his lime, he cleared his throat. “So how about you? How have you been baby?” It had been awhile since he had seen her in here, and they both knew that the full moon was only about a week away. Not to mention the rumors going around about someone hunting down werewolves. He pulled the rag from his back pocket and started absently wiping the bar down as they talked.

Seeing Carter was something that made her smile all the time. Even if she was upset or depressed about something, no matter how much she wanted to hide the things in her past that made her feel weak, he was always there for her. He let her rant and bitch about it all and he'd been there no matter what to help her through it all. She was glad he had been too. Because, even being a werewolf was hard to cope with for her, and it was nice to have someone else she could count on to keep her sane.
Listening to him now, she couldnt help but grin at his first comment, and have the grin widen more when he started in about his brother. He and Alec were a good pair, two amazing guys. Albeit, one had better taste in vehicles and a sexy motorcycle and the other had absolutely no taste in cars and was still in high school, but it still counted. Shaking her head, she took a sip of her drink, she rolled her eyes and just looked across the bar at him, "Its amazing that you have such a nice car, and a motorcycle to boot, and he has that old heap. Shouldnt that thing be in the junk yard by now? Old women have better cars than that."
When she looked over and noticed the group of girls at the bar trying to get his attention, she laughed faintly, "You have a group of admirerers. You better go handle your fans." she said, watching him walk backwards over to them while still facing her and rolling her eyes at him. What a goof, she thought, watching him across the bar. She'd ever be thankful that she wasnt the jealous type. Nor did she have any reason to be the jealous type. Its not like she and Carter were an official item. They were friends, and the occasional time they'd be more than that. Neither of them had confessed any feelings for each other and if they stuck to it like that, it was whatever.
Not that she didnt have feelings for him. She'd admit she felt... something. But it wasnt like her to make the first move and if he wasnt going to do anything serious about it then neither was she. Sipping her drink, she tucked her hair behind her ear and her mind flitted to the upcoming full moon. It was only a week away and she hadnt done anything to prepare yet. No wolfsbane water, no replacement chains. At least she still had the cage. Dealing with the whole werewolf thing was horrible, but it had to be done. Its what she got for unintentionally spilling another persons blood...
Looking up when Carter came back, she smiled and watched as he poured them a couple shots and slid her a slice of lime. clearly, she spent way too much time with him. He could read her like an open book now. Clinking her shot glass with his, she knocked it back without so much as a wince and sucked the juice out of the lime she'd been given. Being a slight alcoholic had its perks; at least she could handle her alcohol better than most people now.
Smiling when he asked her how he'd been and called her "baby" like he often did, she shrugged, "I've been okay.. Its still hard dealing with the change, but I can handle it. Still trying to find my real parents..." she said, her tone changing in the last sentence. She didnt know how to feel about the idea of finding her real parents, the parents who had abandoned her. Part of her didnt even want to. But she needed closure, so what else could she do? Finishing off her drink, she shook her head and sighed, "I'll be lucky if my life doesnt completely fall apart."

It was hard for Carter to think back on how much he had changed from the carefree jokester he’d been in high school. The guy who would rather make the class laugh than bring home good grades. He’d always been the trouble maker to Alec’s shining star. And all of that had changed with one stupid incident where he had smiled at the wrong girl and gotten himself into trouble at that stupid dive bar. Now he was a closet cynic, and was forced to lie every day to the only bit of family that he had left. It wasn’t like he had a choice. Alec could never find out about their curse, It would ruin him. And if Carter could keep his baby brother out of trouble things would stay that way.
It was crazy knowing that everything that his brother knew was a lie, and that he had been lying to him all these years about the full moons. Thank god he had Danii to talk to. He kept no real secrets from her, and as far as he knew she kept none from him. He couldn’t help but think of how great her smile was while she had let him rant about his brother and his piece of crap car, and when she had praised his babies he almost felt himself stand a little taller. But the grandma comment made him burst out laughing. He wiped his eyes as if it had made him tear up with laughter. “Grandma. That’s good.” He shook his head again thinking about the red jeep in the driveway. “If I have my way it will be soon.” At that moment though, the women signaled for him and he flashed Danii a grin to go take care of them real quick. Before his ‘accident’ this would have been Carters favorite situation. He probably would have flirted with all the girls, and tried to get them to all come home with him. Maybe given them a few free drinks and taken all of their numbers down. But now it was just work, just another part of the job like cleaning the bar or making drinks.
When they finally wandered off he turned back to Danii to make their shots. He swallowed his shot with ease grumbling at the taste of the lime and the twisting thoughts in his head. He so wasn’t drunk enough for this shit yet. Carter reached for another bottle not really caring what it was and refilled both of their glasses as he asked how she’d been while calling her Baby. In most ways, they were the perfect match for each other. Both alcoholics, both werewolves, and they seemed to like all of the same things. The only thing that seemed to be keeping them from turning their relationship into something more was the fact that neither wanted to admit if they liked the other as more than just friends. It was like the proverbial elephant in the room that they both chose to ignore. His hands moved mechanically on the bar as he listened to the uncertainty in her voice, and he offered her a reassuring look. He could feel the confusion wafting off of her about all of the things in her life that she had no control over. Without even thinking he reached out and laid his hand over hers giving it a gentle squeeze. “Hey, come on. Don’t be like that Sweetheart. We’ll get through this together.” He smiled at her. It wasn’t his usual flirting smile. This one was more real, and what remained of the real Carter.
For several minutes he just stood there holding her hand and smileing at her. A slurred ‘Hey bartender’ however broke their little moment though and he pulled his hand back gathering his persona back around him like a coat. He turned to grab the requested beer and fished through his mind for a new topic to break the tension. “So I was going to make a run to Clarksville tomorrow for some more wolfsbane. My stock is running kind of low. Did you need anything? Or your more than welcome to come along if you want. Been awhile since we’ve had a road trip.” He grinned at her. “Besides, you know I love to get you straddling me.” He winked at her as he took a swig of a drink he had just made for himself.

Making Carter laugh was one of very few things that Danielle was good at. She was a wuss when it came to the change, she wasnt good at handling all that werewolf stuff on her own. What she was good at was talking to people, making them smile. And making Carter laugh, which was nice. Smiling softly, she shook her head, watching as he had to wipe his eyes because he'd been laughing to the point of tears. Her statement had been true, though. She'd seen plenty of old women with better cars than that crap mobile of a Jeep that Alec drove.
Watching as Carter went off to help his little group of fan girls, she smiled, thinking about how different he was. Not that she'd known him before, but he'd told her plenty of what he'd been like. Fun loving jokester playboy with a penchant for trouble making. Back then, he would have taken those girls numbers in a heartbeat, probably would have tried to take them all home with him too. But now, he wasnt like that. After he'd triggered the curse, he'd become a better man in some ways. More protective, more responsible. Of course, he had to lie to his brother but that was to protect him.
When he asked her how she was doing, she sighed, going into her usual confused werewolf mode. She was still relatively new to the curse, still trying to figure everything out. It wasnt easy, seeing as she didnt know any of her real family, who might have actually been able to help her if she had. Carter was all she had. When he squeezed her hand, though, she smiled a little and laced her fingers through his, squeezing back. It was nice to have him there for her. If she werent such a chicken shit, she'd probably have told him ages ago that she had feelings for him that werent just friendly, but she hadnt been able to. Cmon, it wasnt like it was that easy with him. And she had a feeling he didnt feel the same. Better to have him as a friend and with her like this, helping her through it all, than to unintentionally push him away by spilling the proverbial beans.
When he broke contact with her hand though, it got a little awkward. She suddenly seemed to remember that while he was her friend, he wasnt hers. They werent in a relationship, he didnt have to comfort her. It was just a habit of his. Blinking and looking at the guy who spoke up, she looked down at her glass after a moment and wondered what would happen if she just said that she thought she liked him. But then he came back with a different topic in mind.
Looking up, she chuckled, rolling her eyes at him when he commented about her straddling him. They usually took his bike whenever they went on roadtrips like the one to Clarksville, "Sure, I'll come with you." she said, smiling.

Despite how cynical Carter had become after triggering the curse, he still didn’t like to see anyone he cared about sad, but it was even more then that with Danii. He saw in her some of himself. Not because of the wolf thing (though that was part of it), but simply they way she was. He hated to see her down in the dumps and he knew that he would have been the same, if not much worse, had he not had Alec to keep him sane. Danii had been on her own until she’d chanced on him, but he had always had Alec to take care of, Alec to think about. He hadn’t had the option of collapsing in on himself into a depression. It was the only thing that for many years had kept him searching for information and trying every day to be a better guardian for his baby brother. It was through his constant searching that he had come across most of his information about wolves and tracked down his estranged grandparents on his father’s side. Even though his grandfather was deceased, his grandmother had smiled knowingly and handed Carter an old journal. It explained everything about the change, and what he could do about it. Apparently his grandfather had kept it to pass on to the next descendent that showed the curse in hopes that they would be more informed then he had been. It had come a little late to help Carter much, but it was the thought that had counted. And then when he had discovered Danii, he had helped her in whatever way he could. He wanted nothing more than to give her a chance at a happier life, something that neither of them had ever gotten a chance at.
But when her fingers twined with his, he wasn’t thinking of the confused woman he’d met, or how he felt responsible for her happiness. None of that crossed his mind. All he could think of was her bright eyes, and the way she smiled at him like he was the only guy in the world. His thumb moved in small circles over her hand as he smiled back at her, until the drunk down the bar from them called out for another beer. That slurred summons was all it took to break their little connection. As he pulled the beer from the cooler and snapped the cap off with a practiced flick of his bottle opener, he contemplated what had just happened. He knew he liked Danii, and as more than just a friend. He had even thought about bring it up with her, maybe seeing if she wanted to go on a date sometime, but he had never really been good at dating even in high school. And asking her to go ‘steady’ with him or some shit like that seemed rather childish. Besides, he didn’t even know if she felt the same. Sure there was chemistry between them (and boy was there a lot of chemistry) but could that be enough? When no mystical answers jumped out at him from behind the liquor bottles he turned back to where she sat staring at her glass in search of a new topic. He told her about his planned trip the next day, casually asking if she’d like to go with him, and throwing in a derogatory comment just for good measure.
It was a sign of their friendship that he didn’t get slugged for it though, and he grinned at her genuinely happy for her company. “Alright, sounds like a plan to me.” His boss poked his head around the corner just then to let Carter know it was last call before heading back to his office. After taking another swig of his drink he leaned back on the bar by her. “So, what are you up to for the night?” It was his oh so subtle way of seeing if she was busy without coming out and asking quite so bluntly. Or at least he thought it was subtle.
