Being homeschooled didnt leave much time for real, public school. Which was why Sage was glad that her aunt couldnt teach her everything. That way, at least she could spend some time on campus. Especially after the beginning of the school year when she'd made that deal with the principal. She was allowed to take whatever classes in the morning she wanted, along with whatever extra curricular activities she pleased, so long as she stayed til 1 pm every day and helped out in at least one teacher in one class every few days. Which was totally fine with her. She actually liked school, heaven help her.
She was in a few extra curricular activities, one of which included the volleyball team. Which was what had just ended only a few short minutes ago. Sighing, she changed out of her spandex shorts, t-shirt and sneakers only to slip into a green blouse, blue jeans and the black leather boots she'd bought back in Texas. Pulling the elastic out of her hair, she let her hair fall loose over her shoulders. Unlike usual, she'd straightened her hair this morning. Normally, she let it fall in long curls instead. In all honesty, she was contemplating cutting her hair shorter. Less hastle doing it anyway.
Slinging her book and gym bags over her shoulder, she walked out of the change room and waved to the team coach before walking out of the gym toward the parking lot, where her yellow Mustang was parked. The bag from her morning martial arts class was in the back seat. Not something she could take on campus, but thankfully there were a few places close to Mystic Falls that did coarses. She was a brown belt, which meant she was nearly three belts away from her black. It had been something she'd used to deal with the stress of her life as a witch and the nightmares left over from her parents brutal suicides. Floristry just didnt do it.
Picking up the martial arts bag, she popped the trunk of the car and tossed the three bags in so there was room in the back. She was supposed to go for coffee with a few friends. Not that she really felt like it today. She wanted nothing more than to spend some time in the apothecary, see about whatever new supplies they had, maybe gone over to see if Xander would help her with a few spells she was working on that she couldnt quite get right. He'd been her go-to guy in the last couple weeks, and a good friend since he'd helped her find something to deal with her nightmares.
Closing the trunk with a solid "thunk", she sighed and moved so she was leaning back on the drivers side door of the car, pulling her earbuds out of her ears and turning her iPod off and sliding it into the pocket of her purse before digging her cell phone out. She'd lived here a long time, since she was twelve. After her baby sister had died as a result of her Hutchinson-Guilford Progeria Syndrome and her parents had committed suicide a year after, on the anniversary of her death. Her aunt had been good to her and Ezra - her older brother. And the three of them had gotten along great. She'd given both kids a good job at her floral shop and had home schooled both Sage and Ezra after they'd come to live with her. Aunt Jackie was an interesting character.
Looking around as she waited for her friend Tarynn to get out of class. It'd be a little while, so she just let herself slip into her own thoughts. Tapping her foot on the ground to a song she had stuck in her head, she looked around and someone unknowingly caught her eye. Alec Miller. He was her age, a cute boy with dark hair and sweet eyes, an equally sweet smile. She had History class with him in second period, and she'd had a bit of a crush on him since she'd started coming to school here. She'd never gotten the courage to actually talk to him though. That was way to hard. Sage may have been outgoing with her friends but with people she barely knew, or guys she liked, she was shy.
She knew Alec had a brother, Carter. The guy had hit on her every now and then at the Grill, though it was all friendly. She had no interest in him and anyway, he was too old for her and she was too young for him. It was more just friendly banter, and she considered him a friend. It was easy to talk to him, at least. Alec was another story. She'd never really had a full on conversation with him. They'd exchanged a couple hello's in class every now and again, or smiled at each other whenever they passed in the hall - like familiars would - but there was nothing else in it.
Jumping when her phone went off, her ring tone singing Even If It Breaks Your Heart by the Eli Young Band, she sighed. A text. From her brother, no less. Looking down at the screen, she chuckled to herself lightly. Her poor brother was being harrassed by the batty woman they lived with. Aunt Jackie was a bit excentric, if not a total nut job. She was fun to hang out with though. Poor Ezra would have her all to himself today, since she didnt work and didnt intend to go home for a while. Sucks to be him, she thought.

“Miller! I need to speak with you for a second.” Alec looked up from his group of friends as they were about to walk out the door of the locker room. “Okay coach.” He started walking towards where Coach Peterson stood by his office door, but turned so he was walking backwards for a few moments. “I’ll be right back guys.” They nodded to acknowledge him as he turned back to meet the man in front of him. Coach motioned into his office and Alec followed cautiously. “What’s up Coach?” He hiked his book bag higher up his shoulder. Peterson sighed and sat down in his desk chair before motioning to a paper on his desk. “I just received a note from your history teacher… your failing Alec.” ‘Crap!’ Alec thought fiercely, his heart starting to pound. “You know that the rules state that if any of my players are failing a class, they can’t play until they pull up their grades.” He stepped foreward gripping the strap of his bag. “Coach, I’m working on it… just don’t take me o-“ Coach Peterson held up a hand to stop Alec from talking. “Now, Alec, your one of my best, and I don’t want to have to take you out of the roster… So, I talked to Mr. Saltzman, and he’s agreed to give you an extra credit test next Friday. If you pass it, he’ll raise your grade.” Alec’s face split into a relieved grin. “Really?! I won’t fail it, I promise.” The older man stood up and clapped him on the shoulder. “Good, I’m counting on you kid. We need you in the game next week if we want to win.” He smiled at Alec who nodded with a relieved smile. “I’ll work on it, I don’t want to see the Cyclones win next week either.” Peterson walked around his desk and sat down again. “Alright son, work on that play we practiced today and I’ll see you in practice tomorrow.”
Alec nodded again and took that as his dismissal to leave. He turned and strode out of the office composing his face back into his usual grin. Once outside he rejoined his friends who of course decided to heckle him about being in trouble with the coach.”Let me guess, Coah wanted to dote on his ‘star player’ some more.” “Haha Shut up Jeff, He just wanted to give me some papers for Carter.” Jeff, who had been just ahead of Alec trotted a few steps forward spun and tossed the football in his arms at Alec’s face. “Yea, suuuuree." This comment of course broke the whole group out in laughter as they walked towards the parking lot tossing the ball between them. “Alec! Go long!” Another friend (Zach) lined up the throw and chucked it. With a fierce grin, Alec hiked his bag up and took off in a run for the flying ball, but the toss was faster and he wasn’t going to get to it in time. He had only a few seconds to see where it was going and yell “Heads up!” before the ball collided with a dark haired girl leaning against a yellow mustang. He cringed as he watched it strike her hands and knock all of her things to the ground. Doing the friendly thing, Alec jogged forward and squatted beside her to help her pick up her stuff. “Hey, I’m sorry about that. Zach’s an idiot sometimes.” He tucked the football under his arm and stood holding her things back out to her. “Are you alright?” Now that he was actually looking at her, she looked oddly familiar, as if he’d met her before, but he couldn’t quite place her. She was cute in a different sort of way. She wasn’t like all the blonde cheerleaders that tended to hang around the foot ball team, they were all like clones. But she was different, more…. down to earth it seemed with long straight dark hair, and soft grey-green eyes. “Alec, Come on man!” He turned around and gestured a finger to let them know he needed a min before whipping the football back at Zach and nailing him in the stomach. He turned back to the girl in front of him. “I’m really sorry about him. I’m Alec by the way.” He flashed his charming smile, one that almost mirrored his brothers

Sage had been in the middle of writing up a huge text to her brother explaining all the reasons why she wasnt helping him out of quality time with Aunt Jackie when something came flying out of nowhere and knocked her notebook, pen and cell phone out of her hands, knocking them onto the ground, "Oh, crap." she said, crouching down to grab her stuff when someone else grabbed at her notebook at the same time, their hands meeting ontop of it. Blinking, she looked up and saw the guy she was thinking about before. Alec.
"Oh, um..." she said, noticing that the thing that had knocked her things down had been the football under Alec's arm, "Yeah, I'm fine." she said, standing up and taking the stuff he offered, "You, uh, you just saved me from sending a huge text to my brother." she smiled a little. God, she probably looked like such an idiot right now, standing here with her things, babbling like a moron. Why did she have to be so shy? Why couldnt she just be relaxed and deal with it easily like a normal person.
Suddenly, he was apologizing again and introducing herself, "Yeah, I know who you are." she said then blushed deeply, "I mean.. uh, I mean, we have History together with Mr. Saltzman. I'm Sage Reagan." she said, smiling and totally embarrassed, holding her hand out to him.

Alec felt like such a tool for the football hitting this girl, but at least he hadn’t been the one to throw it. Sadly Zach was probably laughing at the poor girls misfortune. That was the difference between jock heads like Zach and nice guys like Alec. He squatted on his heels and reached out to pick up her notebook at the same time that a much more delicate hand reached for it. Her hand laid on top of his for a second before she withdrew it and stood up. He smiled at the ground and stood to hand her stuff back to her. “You, uh, just saved me from sending a huge text to my brother.” He couldn’t help but think she had a beautiful smile, and offered one back to her. “Well I’m glad I could help you out then.” But when he introduced herself and she said she knew who he was and promptly blushed he had to raise an eyebrow with interest. She quickly covered her tracks though and he smiled. “That’s right, you sit like 2 desks behind me right?” He hiked his bag up and reached out to take her hand. “Well it's nice to finally meet you. I actually don’t pay much attention to that class… I’m not very good with history you know what I mean? I feel like if it’s done and over with then why should we worry about it.” He chuckled lightly at his own reasoning before a shout grabbed his attention.
“Yo Alec let’s go!” He looked back over his shoulder. Him and the guys were supposed to be heading over to the Grill for a bite to eat, but now that Alec was talking to her he was enjoying himself. Why hadn't he noticed her really before? He could remember glimpsing her in the halls vaguely or smiling at her in class if they happened to look at each other, but for whatever reason he'd never really noticed her before. Perhaps it was because she was the shy type or maybe he just wasn't very observant. “I’ll… catch up with you guys later.” He called out waving to them. They waved in return and someone (probably Zach) gave out a few cat calls in Alecs direction. He rolled his eyes turning back to Sage. “Like I said, ignore them.” He smiled, and suddenly seemed to notice the car she was leaning against. “Wow. Is this yours?” It was a pretty nice car with a nice motor in it. It would hands down blow his jeep out of the water, but that wasn’t what he was driving today.

The fact that the guy who'd thrown the football - Zach, or whatever - was visibly laughing at her misfortune was something that would have irritated her if it were any other day but she was walking on sunshine today, and in the best mood in the world. So, she pretty much just ignored him. However, she could see that Alec felt bad for it, and she couldnt help but think how sweet that was. It wasnt until she knelt down at the same time he did and their hands touched that she felt a little more embarrassed. What a cliche. Why did it have to happen to her? Pulling her hand back and standing up, she covered up her embarrassment with a comment about her brother, and couldnt help but feel at ease when he smiled back at her.
He was such a nice guy, she'd thought. And things seemed to be going okay... until she put her foot in her mouth and mentioned that she knew who he was. Covering that one up was easy enough though, and when he replied, she felt a little more relaxed. God, talking to this guy was so out of character for her. She was the shy one. She didnt generally talk to people she'd never talked to before. With her friends, it was easier, because she at least knew them. With Alec, she knew next to nothing about him aside from the fact that he played football, that he had an older brother that pretty much hit on any girl in town, so long as they went to the Grill where he worked and that he was in her History class with Mr. Saltzman.
When he asked her if she sat two desks behind her, she blinked. She hadnt expected him to have known that, "Yeah, that's me." she chuckled and smiled at him, "Well, its pretty interesting depending on what perspective its given in. Alaric makes it interesting, and he's a great teacher. If you need help with anything in class, I could always help you." she said, tucking her hair behind her ear. Thats when they heard the guys calling him over. If he decided to leave, she wouldnt have stopped him. They were his friends, after all. But he didnt. Instead, he told them to go on without him, and that surprised her more than the rest of it did. Well, the cat calls from Zach didnt, but his reply to them did.
Smiling when Zach did make the cat calls, she rolled her eyes at him and looked back at Alec when he noticed something. She'd almost forgotten she was leaning against her bright yellow mustang, and when she looked back at it, she smiled, "Yeah, this is my baby." she chuckled, "I work in my Aunts flower shop, so I have a fairly steady income for it. My brother has a F-150, though it doesnt stop him from getting me to drive him everywhere. That poor truck's gas tank is probably still full from when he first bought it."
Thinking about Ezra's truck, she smiled and shook her head. He barely drove that truck. In fact, it was practically her second vehicle, since she drove it more than its owner did. But whatever. Looking at Alec, she chuckled and pushed off of the side of the car and stepped away, "Go ahead and take a look." she said, "Its nothing too fancy. Just enough to get me around, but I'm hoping to put some more money into it after we graduate and I'm working in the shop full time."

It wasn’t like Alec was completely oblivious to his surroundings, he did pay attention to football and of course girls. But somehow Sage had slipped under his radar. It could be because he really didn’t see her outside of class (And lord knows he was always zoned out there), but it was more than that. It was like she had gone out of her way to stay in the shadows. He scuffed his shoe on the pavement absently as she defended the class. Yea Mr. Saltzman made the subject more interesting than others would have, but it was still all just boring to him. And then she offered to help him out sometime. He studied her face for a moment wondering if she was joking or making fun of him. But he saw nothing in her face but kindness. He had to smile then. “Really? That would actually be really great… I’m kind of failing at the moment.” He shifted his bag on his shoulder and chuckled lightly. “I will warn you though, I’m pretty horrible with history. I mean like ridiculously bad.” His smile had shifted into a lopsided grin at the offer.
Just then his friends called out to him and he turned to answer waving them off and discreetly giving Zach the finger. God they could be embarrassing sometimes, but that was friends for you. It was almost like they existed to make you look bad sometimes, but Alec knew that Zach didn’t really mean it. He may be an idiot, but he was also a jokester. It was then that he noticed her care and his opinion of Sage sky rocketed. Any girl who knew anything about cars was like an angel sent from heaven. He nodded in enthusiasm as she told him about working for her Aunt and her brother. When she told him to go ahead and have a look he enthusiastically dropped his bag to the ground and popped the hood. His eyes lit up as he examined all of the engine components. His grin lit up when he glanced back at her. “This is a sweet car. She ride good?”
He stood up closing the hood, not wanting to seem rude by paying more attention to her car that to her. “I’ve just got an red jeep wrangler. It’s a little beat up but I’ve done some mods on it.” He let out a big sigh as he lifted his bag back up. “Unfortunately it’s all I can afford on the crappy pay I get at the coffee shop, and my brother won’t help me out. He says I have to 'earn my way' and that if he helps me I’ll never know the value of a dollar.” He rolled his eyes in exasperation. “Personally I think it’s a bunch of bull, but ‘under his roof’ and all.” It was annoying sometimes when Carter tried to play the adult card. He wasn’t that much older than Alec, and he couldn’t exactly reprimand Alec for doing anything because in school Carter would have done 10 times worse. He had always gone out to parties and gotten drunk and hooking up with girls? Forget about it! He had Alec beat hands down. ___________________________________________________ tagged, Sage Reagan / words, 538 muse, None / outfit, click! / credit, zie @ caution

He had a nice smile. It was the first thing she'd thought just then, as he asked her if she was serious about helping him with history class. Yeah, she'd totally help him out. She wasnt one of those people who said something and then didnt follow through. And she generally didnt make fun of people. Mr. Saltzman was her favorite teacher by far, and she enjoyed his class. It was one of her favorites, aside from English. Smiling when he warned her about how horrible he was at history, she shook her head, "Yeah, I'm serious. And dont worry, I can help you get through it." she chuckled, "Its better to have someone to help you then to try and go at it alone."
Looking up when his friends called, she smiled, "You can go and join them if you want. I dont want to keep you from your plans." she commented, before she realized he was looking at her car. Chuckling when he went to take a look at her Mustang, she went back to leaning against the side of the car, watching him curiously. So, he liked cars too. She could probably match him for that one. Chuckling, she shrugged, "Yeah, she's great. I worked my ass off to get her, though, so she better. My brother has a 2003 Harley Davidson Dyna Super Sport Glide bike he's been riding since he was eighteen. He's a huge bike and car finatic so we pretty much work on them together whenever we do mods."
Smiling when he told her about his jeep, she nodded. Really, she'd already known about his jeep. She'd seen the thing at school all the time, noticed when he pulled into the lot, "He's actually got a point, though. Its better to struggle through life with your own money than ask for someone elses and never learn." she said, chuckling, "It's easier to get help with it, though, which can be nice."
Looking down at her phone when it went off again, she sighed, "I'm should go. My brother needs help in the shop and I need to study for the history test at the end of the week." she said then looked up at him, "Um.. Feel free to say no, but you can come with me if you want. There wont be many people in the shop today and I can help you study for the test at the same time as I help my brother."

Alec wasn’t used to letting others know he wasn’t good at something. It kind of conflicted with the tough guy attitude that came with being a jock, and also with the way Carter had brought him up, but he got a feeling he could trust this girl and even if she did decide to blab his business through the school… well who would the student body rather believe: The star of the foot ball team, or some half homeschooled girl that stayed out of the spotlight? But he had no need to worry when she smiled back at him and smiled sincerely while again saying she would help. “Yea I guess…” She shrugged looking at the ground. “It’s just not usually something I’d do.” After his friends called after him and he dismissed them he couldn’t help smile when she spoke. “Nah, It’s not really plans. Sitting around at the grill listening to the guys gossip about their latest ‘conquests’.” He put conquests in air quotes. “Not really as much fun as it sounds.” He chuckled and a moment later noticed her car.
Excitement rushed through him and he dropped his bag to begin examining the engine half listening to her as she talked about working hard to get it and how her brother had a nice bike. He smiled as he let the hood back down and latched it shut. “So I’m guessing you know your way around a car.” He grinned. “I gotta say that’s kinda... hot.” Did he really just say that? Dear god. He wouldn’t blame her if she hopped into her car and drove off now. Quickly changing the subject, he told her about his jeep and hoe he wished Carter would help him get a new car. He nodded in agreement. “Yea true. I mean, I get the point he’s trying to get me to learn. I understand that he just wants me to ‘learn the value of a dollar’ but it sucks when I look out into our driveway and I can see his frickin’ nice ass 75’ corvette, and shiny new crotch rocket and all I have is a beat up jeep.”
He shook his head clearing it out of his mind. “It’s whatever though. Hopefully soon I can afford to get something alittle nicer.” He smiled at her trying to lighten the mood a little and wishing he hadn’t just complained about everything to her. But it was her that changed the subject after he phone went off again. Go with her to her job huh? Might be fun, plus they could get a jump start on his tutoring. He snagged the shoulder strap of his book bag and swung it up onto his shoulder. “Sure. Sounds like fun.” ___________________________________________________ tagged, Sage Reagan / words, 458 muse, I feel like this is scatterbrained, but my muse didn't want to cooperate. =/ / outfit, click! / credit, zie @ caution
